À contretemps is built around a play of rhythms and breaks. The verticals and rectangles establish an almost architectural structure, regularly disrupted by shifts, changes in proportions and several curved forms that interrupt the rigor of the whole.
The palette combines cream, grey, blue, ochre and brown with a few bolder red accents. Worked in successive layers, the material retains traces of scraping and reworking, which disrupt the sharpness of the flat areas and give depth to the surface.
With this work, Sophie Dumont continues her exploration of geometric abstraction in which the construction is never entirely stable. The forms seem to follow their own rhythm, sometimes regular, sometimes off-kilter—like a rhythm that deliberately chooses not to fall where it is expected.
