A large burgundy curve traverses the composition and imposes its movement, while around it verticals, circles, and masses of color are organized. Burnt orange, deep green, red, powdery pink, greyish blue, ochres, and broken whites respond to each other in a balance that is both structured and intuitive.
The title borrows its meaning from musical vocabulary: a countermelody is a secondary melodic line that accompanies a main line while retaining its autonomy. Here, each form thus seems to develop its own voice within a common whole.
Painted in oil on linen canvas in successive layers, the work deliberately retains traces of its construction. Rubbing, transparencies, reworkings and surface irregularities soften the geometry and give the painting its material depth.
With Contrechant , Sophie Dumont continues her research around an abstraction where structure, matter and colour are organized like the different voices of a composition.
