The composition unfolds horizontally through a succession of blue-grey, terracotta, ochre, muted green and off-white layers. These fields of colour evoke fragments of land, water and distant relief without referring to any specific place. Sophie Dumont does not seek to depict a real landscape, but rather to convey the memory of a space, the sensation of changing light and the depth of a horizon extending beyond the canvas.
The painting is built through successive layers, using both palette knife and brush. Overlapping passages, scraping and partial erasures reveal earlier colours and give the surface its depth. The lighter areas open up the composition, while terracotta accents and darker lines establish its rhythm.
