In Prelude to the Unexpected , Sophie Dumont explores the relationships between curved forms and geometric structures within a composition where the elements seem to assemble according to an inner rhythm. Arcs, rectangles, and circular fragments respond to one another, creating a balance between movement and stability, tension and breath.
The palette combines muted greens, deep reds, bluish greys, dark browns, and off-whites. The forms intersect and overlap, suggesting an imaginary architecture without ever imposing a single interpretation.
Created with oil on canvas, using a knife and brush, the work is built up in successive layers. Scraping, transparency, and reworking reveal traces of the painterly process and give the surfaces a depth that contrasts with the apparent rigor of the composition.
At the border between geometric abstraction and architectural evocation, Prelude to the Unexpected invites the eye to move freely between the forms and the spaces they delineate.
